We are approaching the final quarter of 2022 and, despite the disastrous effects of the COVID-19 outbreak on several enterprises throughout the world, the gaming industry has thrived. The global gaming industry brought in $178.2 billion in 2021. In 2022, this sum is projected to rise to $196 billion. This is in part due to a large portion of the population turning to gaming as a source of entertainment and escape during a global pandemic (we certainly did!). The other side is the tremendous rate of technological advancements in the industry in recent years.

Of course, we’re talking about the adoption of Web3 technologies in the gaming industry. Super complex and complete architectures are an integral part of this evolution – and are just the thing that inspires our ever curious Cloudoki developers to get out of bed in the morning. We’ve been really lucky to have close contact with NFTs and Blockchain in the past, albeit from a different perspective (such as fintech projects). But with a team of passionate gamers also on board, it’s been a thrill to dive into projects within this industry.

From Pong to Kong, Bandicoot to Modern Warfare, the gaming industry has been around for close to 50 years, yet over time it has moved far away from software development. That is, until recently. Once we hit the early 2000s, gaming rapidly moved from “casual pastime” and “as long as it works, it’s fine” to a very serious, multi-billion dollar, high-stakes industry with no room for error. With the inclusion of Cryptocurrencies, Wallets, and NFTs in some of the biggest modern online games, such as Axie Infinity, it is now more important than ever to ensure the functionality, scalability, and security of our clients’ products.

Especially given the immutable nature of blockchain, our experience in smart contracts is invaluable for a brand looking to branch into the world of NFTs or Crypto elements. We’ve seen evolutions in smart contracts in some NFTs, being used to store updatable metadata like character stats or let users execute various commands. Others are working towards making in-game items like weapons or character skins into NFTs, believing it to be the future of in-game economies. We’ve had some serious fun supporting our clients in these ventures.

Gen-Z (those born between 1997-2012; making a majority of us here on the team feel quite old) have entirely upended the gaming industry as we knew it – and are the key demographic we should all be looking at for future design choices. They lead the charge in NFT games, with an average of 18% of respondents worldwide in the 18–34 age group reporting having played a Play-To-Earn game. Some estimates in the APAC region tally this number closer to 40%. But it’s not only what they are playing – It is how they are playing.

57% of modern U.S. players game on smartphones, a higher percentage than those that play on traditional consoles (46%) – but many will cross platform to avoid hardware limitations in order to play the latest trending game. However, regardless of industry or platform, APIs and cross device functionality has been a speciality for our development team for over ten years. The gaming industry is no different.

We know how to make our client’s product look its best, no matter the device or technology. Bigger games mean bigger architectures that need better and more robust solutions. And this is exactly our cup of tea.

Bottom line is, we’re teaching new tricks to a very established industry using our expertise and background in benchmark software solutions. Our partnership over the past year with cybersecurity and load testing specialists, Cyrex, has afforded us even more opportunity to work and grow within the gaming space. And we’re super excited for what comes next.

Do you have a project in development which would benefit from our team’s experience? We’d love to hear more about it. Get in touch with us at hello@cloudoki.com.
